About the Conference

The 57th Annual Conference of the International Linguistic Association will be held April 13-15th, 2012 at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, City University of New York located at 199 Chambers St. in the Tribeca neighborhood in New York City.

The theme of this year’s conference is Language and Institutions.

Papers from across the discipline of linguistics will be presented; however, the theme and focus of this year’s conference is LANGUAGE AND INSTITUTIONS, in which participants are invited to examine how language functions within institutions and/or how institutional contexts shape language. These studies may focus on a wide variety of institutions including, but not limited to, education, medicine, social work, law enforcement, urban planning, religion, government, and family. Papers addressing the theme may report qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-method research studies.

We hope that this year’s conference encourages scholars from across linguistic disciplines, as well as scholars whose interests lie at the intersection between language and institutions.

More details about the conference are coming, including information on registration fees and housing! Questions may be sent to Conference Chair, Professor Maureen Matarese at the following email address: conference@ilaword.org, or Annika Wendt at awendt@ilaword.org.
